“Sport Integrity in Action: Building Trust in Fair Competition” Conference

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) hosted the “Sport Integrity in Action: Building Trust in Fair Competition” international  conference today (12 November), an event which demonstrates the University’s dedication to promoting sports excellence and integrity in the international arena.

 

The conference, organised by the Department of Sports and Health Sciences of the Academy of Wellness and Human Development under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, together with the Centre for Exercise Science and Medicine (CESAME) at HKBU, was supported by the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) and the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS).

 

The event brought together international experts, academics and other stakeholders to discuss the global leadership and collaborative governance in safeguarding sport integrity, athlete-centred strategies for promoting clean sport, and the role of medical professionals in preventing inadvertent doping. Participants also examined next-generation anti-doping measures, athletes’ experiences with unintentional doping, and the enduring journey from ancient ideals of fair play to today’s commitment to integrity and advocacy for clean athletes.

 

Mr Paul Poon, Deputy Chairman of the Council and the Court, and Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU attended the opening session of the conference.

 

Renowned speakers who joined the conference included Mr Witold Bańka, President of WADA; Dr Yang Yang, Vice President of WADA; Mr Olivier Niggli, Director General of WADA; Professor Li Zhiquan, Director General of the China Anti-Doping Agency; Professor Fabio Pigozzi, President of FIMS; Mr Nick Chan, Director of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre; Professor Frank Fu, Chairperson of the Anti-Doping Organization of Hong Kong, China; and Professor Derwin Chan, Professor of the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Hong Kong Metropolitan University.

 

“Today’s conference is an important event for HKBU’s ongoing effort to promote sport excellence and integrity in the region and the world. We are glad to have gathered renowned global experts from relevant bodies to share the best practices and explore the future direction of fostering clean sport,” said Professor Patrick Lau, Chair and Professor of the Department of Sports and Health Sciences at HKBU.

 

In panel discussions, Professor Patrick Lau, Professor Yannis Pitsiladis, Director of CESAME and Professor of the Department of Biology at HKBU, and other distinguished experts and retired Olympians from around the world focused on the protection of clean sport, the ethics of sport and scientific innovation, and experience sharing by clean athletes on related challenges and advocacies.

 

Dedicated to becoming a globally recognised centre of excellence in sport, and health sciences, HKBU will continue to work in close collaboration with international authorities such as WADA, International Olympic Committee, World Health Organization, and FIMS to foster advancements in agendas related to sport development.
