HKBU student athletes shine at World University Games
【HKBU PRESS RELEASE】HKBU student athletes scored impressive achievements at the FISU World University Games 2023 held in Chengdu from 28 July to 8 August. Cheung Ka-long and Lau Chi-lung, students of the Physical Education and Recreation Management programme, brought home a total of two gold and one silver medals.
Ka-long and Chi-lung, respectively a member of the Fencing Team and Wushu Team of Hong Kong, China, are among the 18 HKBU student athletes who participated in 28 events of the Games. Ka-long shined the stage by securing two gold medals in Men’s Foil Individual and Team events, while Chi-lung earned a silver medal in Men's Nanquan competition with his outstanding performance.
Colleagues from the Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health (SPEH) also contributed to the Games in different roles. Ms Assunta Ng, Lecturer of SPEH, was the coach of Hong Kong’s Badminton Team in the Games. She led the Team to scoop its first-ever bronze medal in the Men’s Single event. In addition, Miss Elain Mak, Lecturer of SPEH, actively participated in the Games as a support team member of Hong Kong’s delegation.

The Hong Kong 2023 International Collegiate Fencing Invitational was successfully held on 10-11 August 2023
【PRESS RELEASE】The Hong Kong 2023 International Collegiate Fencing Invitational, co-hosted by the Absolute Development & Exchange Foundation and Hong Kong Baptist University, took place from 10 to 11 August in Hong Kong. With the objective of providing collegiate fencers with an opportunity to experience an international fencing competition and develop world-class fencing skills, the event brought together about 60 student fencers from 13 universities, including HKBU and others from the United States, including Columbia University, Duke University, Harvard University, Northwestern University, Princeton University, Stanford University, University of North Carolina, University of Notre Dame, University of Pennsylvania and Yale University, and Mainland China including Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance and Tsinghua University for a two-day friendly tournament.
"We hope that in the future, Hong Kong fencers can make a name for themselves on the world stage," said university president Alexander Wai Ping-kong.
President also said that he believes the event can facilitate exchanges among fencers and provide students with a valuable chance to experience a culture different from their own.
