Message from Head

Department vision & aims:

Welcome to the Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health (SPEH). Our vision is to be a globally recognized center of excellence in sport, recreation, exercise, and health, with a world renowned reputation for research, teaching and impact. Through continuous improvement in our academic programmes and services to the local and international community, we pledge to strive for academic excellence and to become a point of reference in the field.

As the new Head of SPEH, I am delighted to have the opportunity to address you through our department's webpage. In line with the university’s mission of whole-person education involving transdisciplinary programmes in teaching and research, our department aims to prepare quality graduates in two major areas, 1) Sport, Exercise Science, and Medicine, and 2) Sport and Recreation Management.

Research culture:

Our faculty members are renowned experts in their respective fields, and they actively engage in cutting-edge research and scholarship that addresses some of the most pressing health and performance challenges of our time. Arguably, one of the greatest threats to the future of humankind is the starvation of physical activity; a situation made worse by the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. With such concerns and societal priorities in mind, our developing academic research culture focuses on physical activity, health, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, healthy aging, wellness, recreation, sport performance and sport management. We are especially committed to serve our aspiring young athletes, nurturing this talent and helping support optimal performance in training and international competition (e.g., Asian and Olympic Games) using state-of-the-art innervations developed by world leading scientists. Collectively, whether for health promotion purposes, or for the benefit of elite sport, our services tie the department to the broader community through voluntary services and our students’ internship with various national sport associations and non-government organizations such as the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) and FIMS.

Prestigious research collaborations:

My team and I take immense pride in the accomplishments of our faculty, staff, and students. We are a very close-knit community of passionate individuals, dedicated to advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and making a positive impact in society, both at a local and international level. Here at SPEH, we believe in the power of collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches reflected in our many national and international collaborations. Some recent examples include collaborations with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), World Health Organization (WHO), World Anti-Doping Agency, the International Federation of Sports medicine (FIMS), to mention just a few.

Nurture talent:

Through their work, our staff strive to create a meaningful difference in society. Equally important are our talented and motivated students, who form the backbone of our department's success. We take pride in providing them with a nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment, where they can grow both personally and professionally. Our graduates go on to become leaders and change-makers, contributing to their communities and industries with the knowledge and skills they have acquired during their time with us. Our dedicated staff members play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the department, providing administrative support, and assisting our faculty and students in achieving their goals. Their commitment to efficiency and professionalism contributes significantly to the overall success of our department.

Inclusive and diverse environment:

As Head of Department, I am deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment where everyone's ideas and perspectives are valued. We strive to create an atmosphere of respect, openness, and collaboration that encourages creativity and the free exchange of knowledge. Through this webpage, we aim to keep you informed about our latest achievements, research breakthroughs, events, and other significant activities within our department. For example, an important initiative of the Department is the “Talented Athletes Direct Admission Scheme” that offers scholarships to outstanding athletes.

In addition to the above, this website serves as a platform for sharing our success stories and inspiring others to join us on this exciting journey. I invite you all to explore our webpage and learn more about the world leading research being carried out by the SPEH. Whether you are a prospective student, a colleague from academia, an industry partner, or a member of the community, we encourage you to reach out, collaborate, and be a part of our vibrant academic family. Thank you for visiting us online. Your support and interest in our endeavors are greatly appreciated.
