Programme

Aims of the Programme

The programme aims to provide opportunities for students to take a reflective and interdisciplinary approach to the planning, provision, and management of sport and leisure. The programme also emphasizes a life-span approach to understanding the relationship among sport, leisure, and wellbeing, and offers students with opportunities for active learning in various settings.

 

Admission Requirements

Applicants seeking admissions to the programme should possess:

A bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university. Priority will be given to applicants who have related majors (e.g., physical education, sport/exercise science, sport/recreation/leisure management) or relevant work experiences.

 

Proof of English proficiency is required for all applicants whose first degree is obtained from non-English medium institutions. These applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for English proficiency:

              1.          a score of 74 (internet-based test) with a minimum score of 21 for writing section in TOEFL*; or

              2.          an overall band score of 6.0 with a minimum score of 6.0 for writing section and 5.5 for other sections in IELTS*

            *Note: Test result provided should be within two years from the date of issuance of the Admission Offer letter. TOEFL iBT Home Edition or IELTS Indicator test is not accepted.

 

Programme Structure

This is a taught master’s degree programme designed for professionals working or intending to work in the field of Sport and Leisure Management.

Most courses are taught by a combination of lecture discussions and seminars held on weekday evenings and/or Saturday mornings or afternoons.

Requirement

For graduation, students must complete 27 units from coursework within the duration of the programme and obtain:

    1. Grade C- or above in all courses, and
    2. A cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above.

Students can select two-year part-time or one-year full-time study mode. With special permission a student may extend his or her study but in no cases would the period of study be allowed to exceed one more calendar year of the selected study mode.

      4 Courses in Semester 2 and 1 Summer course, OR

      4 Courses in Semester 2 and Independent Project/Practicum, OR

      3 Courses in Semester 2, 1 summer course  and independent Project/Practicum

Course Description
Foundations in Sport and Leisure Management
This course aims to provide a common foundation for students by presenting a coherent vocabulary for conceptualizing and discussing trends and issues in sport and leisure management. It also aims to present a comprehensive perspective on subsequent courses within the programme and their relationships to sport and leisure management as a field of study.
Management Skills and Communications
This course revisits the basic theories of management and communication in developing students to apply these fundamental concepts to analyse management scenarios related to the sport and leisure industry and to utilize their power of speech to increase effectiveness in interpersonal relationships and communications.
Management of Human Resources
This course aims to provide students with opportunities to examine human resource management models and their applications in sport and leisure services. Issues on the management of finance as related to human resource management will also be discussed
Planning and Developing Sport and Leisure Facilities
This course provides an overview of sports facilities including indoor, outdoor, and aquatic facilities. Opportunities will be provided to examine local sport and leisure facilities with emphasis on the process of planning, design, construction, and management.
Marketing of Sport and Leisure Services
This course enables students to understand current theories and practices of marketing sport and leisure services, the economic impact of sport and leisure marketing, and the impact of technology on marketing trends.
Financial Management
This course aims to revisit and explore the basic information contained in financial statements. It also aims to further provide students with concepts and techniques in cost and management accounting and to develop students' ability in using relevant accounting data for management policy determination, decision making and performance evaluation.
Seminar on Contemporary Issues in Sport and Leisure
This course provides a forum for the discussion of contemporary issues related to sport and leisure. Discussion topics may include social, legal, ethical, and policy issues shaping the delivery and practice of sport and leisure.
Health Promotion
This course provides a forum for the discussion of current concepts and roles of sport and leisure in the promotion of health, wellness, and quality living.
Development and Management of Sport and Leisure Services for Different Target Groups
This course aims at offering students an opportunity to explore local and international developments in sport and leisure. Particular emphasis will be placed on the development and management of youth, elderly, and atypical programmes in schools and the community.
Research Methods
This course aims to develop students' functional knowledge of the research process with particular emphasis on the ability to conduct independent research.
Event Management
This course aims to provide a common foundation for students by presenting conceptualizing and discussing the functions of program and event management.
Independent Project
The independent project provides students with an opportunity to apply their professional knowledge and critical skills to examine, analyses and evaluate an issue of interest in depth.  Students will carry out a research project on a sport and leisure management topic of their interest.

Sports Analytics

This course introduces students to data science and applications of big data analytics technologies for sports business decision support.

Practicum

This course provides students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in a specific area in the sport and leisure industires under professional supervision and guidance.
