Introduction

The Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health offers a Ph.D. programme in a full-time mode, which covers

  • Physical recreation and wellness
  • Physical activity
  • Health benefits of exercise
  • Exercise biochemistry
  • Exercise physiology
  • Cardiovascular disease and related co-morbidities
  • Prevention of obesity
  • Physiological demands of sporting activities on children and adults
  • Lifetime sports and recreation
  • Sport injury prevention
  • Gender and aging issues on sports
  • Sports and leisure management; as well as
  • Sport psychology and mental health

 

Students completing the Ph.D. degree programme may pursue research or academic careers in education, NGOs, or commercial setters.

 

Normal Period of Ph.D. Study

Full-time: 4 years

 

Academic Qualification Requirements

Applicants seeking admission to the Ph.D. degree programme should possess:

a) A master’s degree from a recognized university or comparable institution; or

b) A bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours from a recognized university or comparable institution. Candidates should have evidence of research achievement/experience/potential.

 

Language Proficiency Requirements

a) Proof of English as the medium of instruction for the major degree; or

b) International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least 6.5; or

c) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 79 (Internet-based Test). 

IELTS and TOEFL scores are considered valid for two years from the test date.

 

Required Documents

1) Proof of English as MOI or IELTS/TOEFL score

2) Certificates of graduation for bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the university

3) Transcripts for bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the university

4) Research proposal

5) Publications and additional supporting documents, if any

6) Two academic referee reports (Provided by the referees directly. Applicants may remind their referees to check their email for submission.)
Certified English translation is required for documents not in English.

 

For applicants with qualifications from Mainland China:
a) Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate (教育部学历证书电子注册备案表); and
b) Online Verification Report of Student Record (教育部学籍在线验证报告); and
c) Online Verification Report of Higher Education Degree Certificate (中国高等教育学位在线验证报告) from CHSI

 

For applicants from Mainland China with an overseas qualification:
Overseas Credentials Evaluation Report(国(境)外学历学位认证书)

 

For applicants with a qualification from Overseas:
a) e-transcripts via recognized central platforms (e.g. MyeQuals, Parchment) or the website of the institutions concerned; or
b) an official transcript sent in a sealed envelope directly from the institutions concerned

 

Application Procedures

Complete the online application form and upload the required documents to the online system.

Application has to be submitted online at Online Application System for Admission to Postgraduate Studies.

Application Period

1 September to 1 December

Since admission offers are highly competitive and subject to quota availability, applicants are strongly recommended to submit their applications by mid-November, allowing time to make up for missing documents. Incomplete applications will not be considered. 

 

Interview Period

Early-December (for HKPFS)

December to January (for non-HKPFS)
Applicants are advised to regularly check their emails in early December to ensure they do not miss any short notice for an interview. The Department will not send individual notifications regarding the results. If applicants do not receive an interview invitation or result email, it can be assumed that their applications  were unsuccessful.
(Subject to quota availability, there may be additional rounds of interviews conducted after December.)

While the academic excellence is of prime consideration, the Review Panels will take into account, but is not limited to the yardsticks as listed below for the selection of candidates:
