Introduction

The Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health offers Ph.D. programme in full-time and part-time modes, which covers

  • Physical recreation and wellness
  • Physical activity
  • Health benefits of exercise
  • Exercise biochemistry
  • Exercise physiology
  • Cardiovascular disease and related co-morbidities
  • Prevention of obesity
  • Physiological demands of sporting activities on children and adults
  • Lifetime sports and recreation
  • Sport injury prevention
  • Gender and aging issues on sports
  • Sports and leisure management; as well as
  • Sport psychology and mental health

 

Students completing the Ph.D. degree programme may pursue research or academic careers in education, NGOs, or commercial setters.

 

Normal Period of Ph.D. Study

Full-time: 4 years

Part-time: 6 years

 

Academic Qualification Requirements

Applicants seeking admission to the Ph.D. degree programme should possess:

a) Master’s degree from a recognized university or comparable institution; or

b) Bachelor’s degree with First Class Honours from a recognized university or comparable institution. Candidates should have evidence of research achievement/experience.

 

Language Proficiency Requirements

An applicant who is seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or comparable institution of which the language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain a minimum score in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) at 79 (IBT) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) at 6.5.
Applicants are also required to meet the subscore requirement of TOEFL (Reading ≥18; Listening ≥18; Speaking≥18; Writing≥19) or IELTS (at least 5.5 for Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing).

Application Period

1 September to 1 December

Since admission offers are highly competitive and subject to quota availability, applicants are strongly advised to submit their applications in time.

 

Interview Period

Early- to mid-December
Applicants are advised to check their emails in early December lest you miss a short notice for an interview. The Department will not individually notify the results. Applicants who do not receive an interview invitation/result email may assume their applications unsuccessful.
(Subject to quota availability, there may be additional rounds of interviews after December.)

While the academic excellence is of prime consideration, the Review Panels will take into account, but is not limited to the yardsticks as listed below for the selection of candidates:
