Exercise, Physical Activity and Health

Exercise or Physical activity and health is an area of research that investigates the role of physical activity and related improvements in individual health and wellness. Investigations with exercise interventions concerning reductions and management of the health risks associated with diseases such as, type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Physical activity and exercise can have immediate and long-term health benefits. Most importantly, regular activity can improve quality of life.

Sport and Exercise Physiology

Sport physiology is the study of how exercise alters the function, metabolic profile and structure of the body. An exercise/applied physiologist seeks to understand the physiological demands of sporting performance and exercise in relation to the pathology of disease. Exercise physiologists look to maximize the performance of elite athletes, vis sophisticated measurement techniques. This results in the identification of dependent variable for performance success. In addition, the scientific applications involved can be used to identify and treat the metabolic consequences of a variety of illnesses, including obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Sport and Exercise Psychology

Sport and exercise psychology is the study of how psychology influences sports, athletic performance, exercise, and physical activity. Sport and exercise psychologists work with professional athletes, coaches and general sport and recreational participants to improve their performance and increase their motivation of physical activity. Further to this, psychologists also investigate adherence and performance characteristics that can be used in sporting, and non-sporting environments.

Exercise and Aging

Exercise and aging research investigates the benefits, facilitators & barriers, strategies, approaches to enhance the health status of the elderly in a positive way. It covers the physical, psychological and social health of aging people. Current projects include, measurement of sarcopenia, benefits of exercise in relation to mobility and social provision for elderly interactions in the community.

3

Exercise and Obesity

Exercise and Obesity investigates how exercise and physical activity can tackle the obesity epidemic and associated co-morbidities via the understanding of the relationships between etiology, health risks and body mechanisms. Prevention and intervention strategies have been developed to help overweight/obese individuals of all genders and ages tackle this global health problem. Research projects include investigations into the effect’s different intensities of exercise and diet manipulation in obese populations.

4

Sport Pedagogy and Physical Education

Sport Pedagogy is the study of how to enhance instructional content, the learning process, and the achievement of learning outcomes between sport and education. Sport pedagogy embodies the law of physical education in the cultivation of physical education function. Research areas include pedagogical educational process, government policy and physical education and physical education and the school curriculum.

Sport Marketing and Management

Sport marketing and management include marketing and management fundamentals within the sport and recreation industry. The research area includes the management of personnel, programs, budgets, and facilities in various sports settings. The discipline involves the promotion of sport, advertising, equipment design and the management of leisure provision. By applying the theory and methods of management, sport marketing and management coordinate sports organizations to achieve predetermined promotion goals in the sport and leisure industry.

Health and Fitness

Health and fitness refers to the level of functional or metabolic efficiency of a living organism. In humans, this is the ability of individuals or communities to adapt and self-manage when facing physical, mental or social challenges. The definition of health-related fitness involves exercise activities that are performed order to try and improve individual physical health. Further to this, the applicability of the research focuses on maintaining health and performance, particularly in the categories of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance and body composition.

Adapted Physical Activity and Exercise

Adapted physical activity and exercise is a highly personalized sports activity and interdisciplinary knowledge system based on promoting the interaction between disabled individuals and the ecological environment, aiming at improving quality of life. This involves investigating the physical, psychological and intellectual barriers to engagement in sporting activities, and includes the social interaction of individuals who cannot share common sports activities over specific periods. The research area involves adapted recreation and entertainment, adapted and applied sports competition and adapted sports rehabilitation.

Exercise Biochemistry

This area considers the metabolic and biochemical responses to exercise and relationships with specific diseases. The research area includes hormonal responses to exercise, immune function, cardiovascular disease and associated biochemistry, diabetes, muscle damage and cerebrovascular incidents. The biochemistry research area also considers psychological biochemistry, including the evaluation of stress hormones (cortisol), cognitive ability (brain derived neurotrophic factor) and brain function (neuron specific enolase and S100b). Further to this the research also supports investigations into the pathophysiology of disease pre and post exercise intervention.
