HKBU PERM programme enrols six elite athletes through the Talented Athletes Direct Admission Scheme
Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has enrolled six elite Hong Kong athletes through the Talented Athletes Direct Admission Scheme (TADAS) launched earlier this year.
The six athletes are Olympic gold medallist fencer Cheung Ka-long, rugby player Forrest Shanna Sanman, table tennis player Kwan Man-ho, swimmer Kwok Chun-hei, Wushu athlete Lau Chi-lung, and track sprinter Shak Kam-ching. All of them are current athletes supported by the Hong Kong Sports Institute.
The athletes have been admitted to the Physical Education and Recreation Management programme offered by the Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health at HKBU.
HKBU is dedicated to providing full support to Hong Kong athletes and the city’s development of sport. Over the years, the University has been conducting sport science research, and it offers comprehensive and diversified sport science and management programmes to nurture sporting talent in Hong Kong. The University established the Elite Athletes Admission Scheme (EAAS) in 2016 to offer flexible study arrangements for full-time athletes in Hong Kong.

PERM fresh graduate named outstanding tertiary student
Nicole Ng, a fresh graduate of the Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme, was recently selected as one of the ten winners of the Outstanding Tertiary Student of Hong Kong award by the Hong Kong Youth and Tertiary Students Association.
Nicole had an active university life. She served as a student ambassador, and she also has several outstanding sporting achievements to her name. Nicole was the captain of the HKBU swimming team for four consecutive years, and she led the team to participate in training sessions and different competitions.
Nicole started swimming training when she was a child, and as a result, she was familiar with the daily routine of intensive training in the early mornings before heading to campus for her classes. She said that apart from improving her physical fitness, sport has also helped her develop a positive and persevering attitude. Nicole is grateful for the opportunities and trust that she received during her studies at HKBU. She has now been hired as a secondary school physical education teacher, and she is determined to help her students nurture their own talents.
Nearly 100 tertiary students from different institutions competed for the Outstanding Tertiary Student of Hong Kong award, which was organised for the first time this year. Candidates had to go through two rounds of interviews and a public vote. Ten winners were then selected by the organiser. The event aims to discover, praise and nurture tertiary students with potential who care about society and show concern for the future development of the Greater Bay Area. It also promotes whole-person development and heightens the students’ sense of national identity.

HKBU outstanding athletes share their Olympic journeys at homecoming event
Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held the “Homecoming Gathering for HKBU Athletes in Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games-cum-Social Sciences in Dialogue” today (18 October) to commend Sarah Lee Wai-sze, Daniel Chan Ho-yuen, Chan Chung-wang and Ho Yuen-kei for their exemplary performances at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Sarah Lee, a bronze medalist in the Women’s Sprint at the Olympic Games, and Daniel Chan, a bronze medalist in the Badminton Men’s Singles WH2 event at the Paralympic Games, are students of the Bachelor of Arts in Creative and Professional Writing programme and the Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme, respectively.
Chan Chung-wang, a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme, competed in the Men’s 110m Hurdles at the Olympic Games, whereas Ho Yuen-kei, an alumna of the Bachelor of Social Sciences in China Studies programme, participated in the boccia competitions at the Paralympic Games.
At the event hosted by HKBU’s Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr Clement Chen Cheng-jen, Chairman of the Council and the Court, and Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, presented the “HKBU Olympian and Paralympian Appreciation Award”, which included a cash prize of HK$150,000, to each of the four outstanding athletes in recognition of their achievements at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
In his welcome address, Professor Alexander Wai said that the four athletes are fighters who have shown great perseverance. They have embraced challenges and performed brilliantly in the world’s top sporting competitions with their superior skills, determination and strength. They have also demonstrated the highest level of sportsmanship and deeply impressed audiences around the world.
“HKBU is committed to assisting the training of athletes through scientific research, and it has nurtured management talent for the sports industry and promoted the systematic development of sport through the Physical Education and Recreation Management programme and the Sport and Recreation Leadership programme. In addition, the University launched the Elite Athletes Admission Scheme in 2016, which has admitted 66 outstanding local athletes to undergraduate programmes,” he added.
At the sharing session moderated by Professor Chung Pak-kwong, Associate Dean (Development) of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Acting Director of Student Affairs at HKBU, the four athletes shared their path to success and discussed the development of sport in Hong Kong with their fellow students. They inspired hundreds of attendees in the onsite and online audiences with their stories of the ups and downs on their sporting journeys, and how they overcame challenges through their relentless perseverance and hard work.
