2018.03.07 1 HKBU Women’s Soccer Team wins intercollegiate competition HKBU Women’s Soccer Team won the championship in the intercollegiate competition organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong (USFHK). HKBU Women’s Soccer Team’s competition progress was similar to last year; after winning all the games in the preliminary round and semi-finals, the team proceeded to the final round to vie for the championship title. They were neck and neck with City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and the competition ended with a penalty shoot-out. With excellent team spirit the HKBU team performed extremely well and beat CityU by two goals to earn the title of Champion. Captain Wong Ka-yan (Sports and Recreation Leadership, Year 4) described the team’s achievement as “unbelievable”. She remarked that their skills were of a different level than the CityU team which comprises several Hong Kong team members. In addition, the striker of the HKBU team switched positions to goalkeeper this year, so she was worried that their attacking ability would be eroded. Luckily, all the issues were resolved by the team’s morale, and competitive spirit.   She said that even during the Chinese New Year holidays, team members dipped into their pockets to finance additional training sessions. In the competition, they held on until the last second even though some ran out of breath and experienced cramps. Ka-yan attributed the win to the new training mode adapted by the coach and the shouts of encouragement from HKBU teachers, staff, students and reserve team members, both of which enabled the team to persist in the competition.
